Second Sunday of Advent 2023

Readings for this Sunday

Introduction to this Sunday’s Proper for Advent II (B)

Isaiah 40.1-11
Jerusalem and Judah have been conquered and the leaders of the people have been deported to Babylon. But even in these seemingly hopeless times the prophet has a vision of the future, of God and the heavenly court.

2 Peter 3.8-15a
Aware that he will soon die, the author leaves his fellow Christians with a testimony of what
being Christian demands. Some people denied that Christ would return because early
Christians expected the world to end within their lifetimes.

Mark 1.1-8
Both Isaiah and Malachi prophesied that, before the Messiah comes at the end of the era, a
prophet will come to prepare the way for him. Now the awaited prophet arrives on the scene
and ushers in the new era.
